AVIATION STRATEGIES INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT APPOINTED TO THE TRANSPORTATION
APPEAL TRIBUNAL OF CANADA
OCTOBER 5, 2005 - MONTREAL – The Minister of
Transport of Canada, the Honourable Jean-C. Lapierre,
announced today the appointment of Dr. Pierre Coutu,
President of Aviation Strategies International, to the
Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada. In a statement
issued earlier today, the Minister declared "I
am very pleased that he has agreed to join the Tribunal.
His broad expertise and knowledge of civil aviation
in Canada will certainly be an asset to the Tribunal”.
When informed of this nomination, Dr. Coutu remarked
“I welcome this nomination with great pride and
am very enthusiastic about the outlook of contributing
to the work of the Tribunal. Minister Lapierre can be
assured that I will honor his confidence”.
The Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada (TATC)
is a quasi-judicial body established pursuant to the
Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada Act, Statutes
of Canada 2001, Chapter 29. The TATC replaces the Civil
Aviation Tribunal which was established under Part IV
of the Aeronautics Act in 1986, and its jurisdiction
extends to the marine and railway sectors.
The Tribunal's jurisdiction is expressly provided for
under the Aeronautics Act, the Canada Shipping Act,
the Marine Transportation Security Act, the Railway
Safety Act and the Canada Transportation Act. Provisions
of the Canada Shipping Act and the Marine Transportation
Security Act are to come into force at a future date.
The Tribunal has a commitment to openness and cooperation
and is mandated to conduct informal, expeditious and
fair hearings.
